The child in her uniform was trying to block the glass door of the net café. She doesn’t want her other classmates to see her there…but it is a glass door… what do you expect? I smiled at her and said, “Excuse me.”
“Ai sorry po,” she replied and slowly opened the door still trying to make sure that anyone wouldn’t just slip right in… so I slip right out!
It wasn’t long until that old blue tricycle stopped in front of me and then I said, “Remedios po.”
I was a bit surprised to see his face. It’s not like I know him but his face is very disturbing. Particularly those teeth…
You see he’s got white teeth with slight yellow alright and it seems really strong…but the funny thing about it is the way it tilts to the left side.
So I wonder… how does he manage to smile that way? When he smiles, it shows! It really shows! He’s bony and dark and… bony, lol. He slouches the way my classmate Mark did…a total ‘c’ curve…so I said “cool!” I wonder when I’m going to learn to slouch like that.
With that posture and skin color and…well he is skinny and all and add it up with those set of teeth? Hahawell it rocks! The people around him probably got used to that smile even if his teeth look like that.
He drove me to Salcedo. We passed by a guy in a blue boxers who just probably came out of the gate. The toddler behind him was trying to open the gate but with no success. His mother was at the verge of shouting and then the guy in blue boxers looked back and scolded him.
We passed by a carenderia near the hospital…a teenage girl put something in the container next to their little carenderia frowning. I wonder what she’s thinking about. Her grandma is frowning as well probably thinking of ways on how to get more costumers. And I’m not sure if she’s really the grandmother of that frowning teenage girl.
Students crossing the Daet Bridge in a way like the astronauts are walking on the moon. I remember Jem and I once walked on that bridge while watching the sunset. I like the way it’s rays reflects on the river below.
Two ladies in pink are walking near DBP. Some people around them are wearing pink as well.
Whenever I saw men or women in pink I always remember Aerosmith. They have this song entitled “Pink” that goes like “Pink is a color of fashion…” and I forgot the rest of the lyrics. I also remember the artist Pink herself. I’m a great fan of hers back in high school and college. She’s quite unique and cool. Pink shirts also reminded me of Boy Abunda’s talk show. That was probably back in college, a gay fashion designer said pink makes men look more like men. Some girls who are also guests of Boy’s show that day also said the same thing. After that more and more guys in UNCIANO wore pink in school. The same thing in Mabini… this then led me to wonder why Sam Milby wore pink when he first entered Big Brother’s house. That also led me to think about those Korean actors of Korean novella’s who wore pink.
Pink also led me to think about my pink shirts. Then I would start to think of the color “yellow”. I don’t know why but when I think about pink…I would later on think about yellow.
May inuman nanaman sa gache plaza. The sunog – baga’s really started their career as high school students. Then you will notice the change it’ll do to them when they are in college… and then usually they die in their 40’s.
There are gay people in gache plaza. Whenever I pass by gache plaza I never fail to see gays there. That is because Sir Ato Samarista’s parlor is situated there. And some of his friends usually hang – out there.
In case you guys didn’t why know I call him Sir Ato… it is because he used to be our student teacher in math back in high school. I was freshman then and he was actually one of my favorite because I learned a lot from him. He teaches better than that one - algebra teacher we had, that we wish we never had, back in high school.
From then on we call him Sir Ato… he preferred to be called that way… back then. And then he graduated. And then I met him in that parlor near Daet Elementary when I had my hair trimmed there. Then he started to have his own parlor in front of CNSC. Until he became so famous and rich that he’s able to make it to that big place in gache plaza. That is one of the artsy cool parlor he had back there. And oh, we met in around 2003. I was about to graduate a cosmetology course then, one of the programs of TESDA, and he taught us (the graduates) to do a fashion show like ramp models do.
Rodel’s 25 – year – old bro is walking in front of the SJ net café holding Ika lovingly. I didn’t know he could be that sweet. I thought Rodel is the only man in the family who could be sweet like that, and of course his father as well. I usually saw his brothers playing in SJ net café. Rodel used to play there even late at night back in college… but now he doesn’t do that anymore. It is probably because he doesn’t have enough money like most of the people from our batch who doesn’t work yet nor training in the hospital. We become very poor after the review season. We no longer have big allowances to sustain our needs. We’ll it is because we have needs back in college that we consider as needs. And now those needs are somewhat…no longer a need for us as it is as it seems before.
That’s the drummer I met back in my band years! Yes and he is still studying in CNSC. He used to be Bern’s old band – mate before Bern made his own band in Mabini. I can tell that he is cute the first time we met him, the first time Bern introduced him to us that night at the battle of the bands. But now I no longer find him cute at all. Well, my ‘cute’ preferences change a lot lately. I no longer find lots of cute guys in Daet compared to the day I’ve set my foot in Mabini.
My phone vibrates. It’s sister Anj! “kanino naman galing yun?” referring to the two messages I forwarded to her lately. “From the concerned citizens”, I replied. We had been sending sms a lot lately. We exchange intellectual messages or jokes. Sometimes we have conversations some silly some serious… but usually silly. I enjoy those conversations with her somehow. We only have a chance to meet once a week in our mission preparation classes, in which she is our teacher. She’s totally humble yet smart and witty that whenever she’s around you wouldn’t help but laugh. I really admire that person. She is one of those people that I can really mark as “astig”. My astig preferences changed already.
I’m in Remedios street now with that bony, skinny, dark tricycle driver with slanted teeth. He’s still wearing that smile of his like he’s totally proud of something.
I grew up in this street. Whenever I enter this street I always catch that unique scent. A scent of freshness and sweetness and love and “I – know – you – you – live – here” – a scent of home.
He’s in red and black pants I went in…the guy that was once a txtmate of my good friend back in college. She said “nag-eenglish siya pero mali – mali nman ag yabang!” I just laughed when she said that. I remember in our younger years he used to make fun of my brother and he usually makes fun of his cousins as well. My brother is an ultimate pikon… a silent pikon type. So he never really speaks when he’s mad. He would just look at you like he’s a cannibal or something and he’s like about to eat you.
I don’t wan’t to make more clues about that mayabang guy. Even if I still have lot’s to tell. If I included those things here someone he knew might read it here and it would cause my life…and that means I’ll never gonna write again. lol.
I stepped out of the tricycle. I wonder why there are always a lot of people in this part of the street…in our part of the street. That is the reason why my mother kept on complaining that she can’t sleep well at night because of the noise that the tambay’s make.
Nikki Cleary is singing hated… its my phone! I have another message.
I’m finally home but found out I have lots of dishes to wash and we still have that left – over cake my one of my sisters bought lately for lunch.
I then remember. It’s one of my sisters birthday.
I never happen to wash the dishes because I had to come out again and I already forgot the reason why. That mayabang guy is now wearing a brown shirt and maong pants. I wonder why he always make it look like he’s neat like my mommy’s mark when all he had is a flabby belly and pizza face.
Whatever happened to that trike driver with a slanted set of teeth...i dont know
