I woke up this morning and the first thing that came to my mind is...get my clothes for they are all dry now.
Then my sister started with her laundry. And started to talk about it. Then she asked me something that as far as I can remember....I asked the same question to one of my companions in the mission field!
"Why do we have to do the laundry?" why can't we just wear something and never get to do the laundry? WHY DO WE ALWAYS HAVE TO DO THE LAUNDRY?
That is my big question before, and her big question now.
I used to tell myself, I'm gonna find a husband who would love to do the laundry so that he'll have the chance to do all the laundry.
Then I came to the mission field. The idea of doing our laundry the old fashion way makes me so sad. I have allergies to some detergent. And I was only adviced to use the gloves. 1,2,3,4,5th and the 6th companion came. My point of view is still the same. "I don't want to do the laundry, I don't enjoy it at all".
I remember, my companion and I talked about it. It's not until we have seen the movie "The Best Two Years" again just for fun, until we made the final decision. "magpalaundry e!"
I would always see this laundry shop whenever we would pass by that area. But never have the guts to go there and have them do my laundry. Besides, I already asked our former mission mum about it. And her reply was, "do your own laundry". As simple as that. Which disappointed me alot. I mean, we have been doing all these work and it's so tiring and everything and the full-time people before get to have a taste of their "nanay" who cooks for them or the "nanay" who do their laundry. And we never get to experience them.
After so many talks and thought...we dared ourselves to go there. Try it!
And yes we did! waa!! Finally! Since we have a budget for the laundry, why not use that budget for that particular thing? And since we have a new mish.pres., meaning a new mish.mum! Rules might have changed.
So we started to do it. The next week came. Then the next. And we found out that the Zone Leaders of some other areas do it sometimes. That boost our feelings about this decision.
Then time came that we are far apart. We're not companions anymore. And I can't do that anymore because in my new area I never really found a laundry shop. So she had a chance to keep on doing it. And then she was transfered to another area then get to do her own laundry again, the old fashion way, handwashing.
We we're together again one Monday. Because both of us are sick. We had our check-ups. Then we have to go have her x-ray done. The office elders gave us a ride, thanks to the AP. And then we found out, inside the car...that they themselves are not doing their own laundry!! They let the laundry shop take care of it! That is a benefit if your area is within the city. Just pick a laundry place then pay, and come back for your 'done' laundry the next day!
Time to go home.
My former Zone Leader, in that area where we've decided to have the laundry shop do our laundry, happened to be in my batch. And this is what he said:
"Eto hindi pala naglalaba oh!"
How did they found out? My companion(1) passed the tradition to her new companion(2). She was transfered so the new companion(2) remained. Laundry time came, and this companion(2) introduced this another new companion(3) to the laundry shop. And this very new companion(3) began to have an allergy. Allergy to the detergent that they're using in that laundry shop. Boom! It is over. They started to do their own laundry again.
The members found out about it as well and they relay that news to the Zone Leaders. They saw the sisters enter that laundry shop.
Lesson? I dunno. I still did not enjoy doing the laundry (handwashing) up to the very end of my mission. But you know what? This is weird. When I get back home from the field? My mother was wondering why I always do the laundry. "Why do you always do the laundry?"
Well, I guess I enjoy doing it now. It's like, it's a part of me. Not doing it could not really complete me. Or maybe the reason is that, doing this...reminds me of my mission. And the fun I had on deciding whether to do my own laundry the old fashion way, or have the laundry shop do the laundry because we don't have a washing machine. And also the fun of doing it with some other missionaries.
Though I heard about missionaries who is lucky enough to have someone lend them their washing machines, or been offered by someone to do the laundry for them...I don't care anymore. I don't find it selfish. I just think and felt that doing the LAUNDRY is really fun. And I will keep on doing it until I have my own family, until the very end of my life..err..or strength that I had :)
